ABOUT GALIL
Galil Medical’s Market Background
Galil Medical’s cryotherapy solutions have been widely used by urologists worldwide for the minimally invasive ablation treatment of prostate, and renal (kidney) cancer. Building upon this success, the company’s new cryotherapy applications are aimed toward the Women’s Health and Interventional Radiology (IR) markets.
History in the marketplace
Since its inception and through to the present, Galil Medical has been committed to advancing cryosurgery (freezing) and cryosurgical treatments as minimally invasive procedures for the medical community.
In 2006, Galil Medical introduced the Presice™ Cryoablation System, featuring multi-point thermal sensors (MTS) and advanced IceVue™ planning and simulation software. These technological advancements allow minimally invasive surgery with a high level of procedure control and excellent clinical results for the cryosurgical ablation of prostate and renal cancer.
In the late 1990’s, Galil Medical introduced SeedNet™, a third generation cryotherapy system especially designed for prostate cryoablation based on unique ultra-thin 17-gauge (1.47mm) needles. Recognizing the clinical value of percutaneous procedures, Galil Medical became the first manufacturer to develop these innovative cryoablation needles.
Ultra-thin needles provide more precise coverage and more uniform lethal temperature distribution, which results in highly accurate and controlled destruction of tissue in cryosurgical procedures. Because of their small diameter, 17-gauge cryoablation needles are inserted without incisions, so patients benefit from reduced trauma and shorter recovery times.
The 17-gauge cryoablation needle innovation has helped Galil Medical become the market leader in truly minimally invasive cryotherapy procedures.
Clinical data shows very positive results for prostate cryotherapy as a primary prostate cancer treatment as well as a salvage treatment, when other treatments have failed. Long-term (10-year) data suggests that prostate cryotherapy or cryosurgery is able to deliver disease-free rates comparable to radical prostatectomy surgery and radiation, with the benefit of lower rates of incontinence, shorter recovery periods and relatively minimal complications.
Minimally invasive treatment modalities are in great demand for renal cancer to replace conventional surgical procedures. Among the various ablation techniques, including radiofrequency (RF), microwave, and HIFU, cryotherapy has gained increasing acceptance as a minimally invasive and effective alternative to partial nephrectomy as a nephron-sparing treatment for small renal tumors. Mid-term (3-year) outcomes for renal cryotherapy show excellent clinical results, reduced morbidity, as well as recovery time compared to alternative treatments.
Galil Medical's products have FDA clearance for a wide range of cancerous and benign conditions including general surgery, thoracic surgery, gynecology, oncology, and urology applications. |
