Advanced
Cryotherapy and Targeted Cryoablation Technology from Galil
Medical
Because of its minimally invasive and highly effective nature,
cryosurgery (also known as cryotherapy or cryoablation) has
become an important medical technique for the treatment of
numerous ailments, including cancers of the kidney, prostate,
or liver. Galil Medical prides itself on being a pioneer in
the world of cryosurgical treatments, and aims to educate
patients and clinicians about its benefits.
Prostate
Cancer Cryotherapy Cryosurgery
for prostate cancer treatment boasts success rates similar
to radiation and invasive surgery with faster recovery times.
It consists of multiple, ultra
thin cryoablation needles being inserted through the perineum
(the area between the scrotum and anus) and into the prostate.
An ultrasound probe placed in the rectum allows doctors to
pinpoint the location of these needles and monitor the entire
cryoablation process, while a warming catheter is inserted
to prevent freezing of the urethra.
With MTS™ (Multi-Point
Thermal Sensors) and thermal sensor needles in place to
monitor temperature and prevent damage to neighboring areas,
a freezing agent is circulated through the cryoablation needles
to create temperatures of negative 40 degrees Celsius or below.
This freezes the prostate and cancer cells in an extremely
cold iceball, while the subsequent thawing process ruptures
and kills the cancer cells. The ablation treatment is then
repeated to ensure all cancerous cells have been destroyed.
Kidney
Cancer Cryotherapy Cryosurgery
is just as effective for kidney cancer treatment. Minimally
invasive and highly successful, kidney
cancer ablation allows doctors to target cortical or peripheral
lesions of the kidney, solid lesions less than 4 cm, and offers
hope to patients with poor kidney function or a single kidney.
By placing ultra
thin cryoablation needles directly into the tumor, an
exceptionally cold iceball is created, which surrounds and
kills cancerous cells while sparing healthy kidney structures.
The freezing and thawing process is often repeated for improved
effectiveness. With kidney
cancer cryoablation, patients experience much faster recovery
times with similar success rates as traditional open surgery
and other treatment options.
Image-Guided
Cryoablation
Image-guided cryotherapy is used to treat solid kidney tumors
and metastatic liver tumors. By merging Galil’s patented freezing
technology with advanced imaging capabilities such as ultrasound,
CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy, doctors are able to place the
ultra thin cryoablation needles with pinpoint accuracy,
and perform percutaneous procedures without the need for surgical
incisions. This allows for faster recovery time, meaning patients
can even go home the same day as the procedure, depending
on the type of anesthesia used.
Cryoablation
Technology
Galil Medical’s advanced cryoablation technology allows for
treatment of many types of malignant and benign tumors using
a minimally invasive procedure that drastically improves recovery
time without sacrificing success rates. When Galil’s powerful
freezing platform for cryosurgery and innovative 17-gauge
cryoablation needles are combined with imaging tools such
as CT, ultrasound, and MRI, doctors can focus on the tumor
without damaging surrounding tissue. Galil also offers The
Presice™ Cryoablation System and new 17-gauge i-Thaw™
needles, which use only argon gas for freezing and thawing.
